How often have I heard these words: Always happy, straightforward, honest, friendly…lovely. These are the words we dog owners like to use when we describe our pets, these adorable creatures.
A few years ago, I abruptly lost one of my lovely creatures. That made me think how much our pets give us, with their openness and frankness. And I wonder if we ever can give as much to other people, either our near and the dear ones or other breeders.
Unfortunately, I have only too often realized that many breeders misunderstand the word frankness. They seem to think that they have the right to “shout from the top of the temple” and irresponsibly insult other breeders with lies and slanders, as if that could help them to improve the quality of their breeding work.
In the middle of these accusations and manipulations, where have we forgotten things like visionary breeding (done with heart and soul), good human relations and creative and confidential co-operation? All we breeders face setbacks sometimes. Even in the middle of our own problems, could it be possible to respect each other and be happy for each other’s accomplishments when we work for this fantastic breed?
Dogs have been my hobby, more or less actively, for almost forty years, and I don’t believe that we can completely reach this target. We concentrate on things we find important and we believe in, and we focus on different issues in different life situations. Besides, what we refuse to do is equally important, if not even more important. Anyway, we all make our own personal choices.

The litter of Bd`s ZaZaZaa “Sanni” and Kirium`s Equinox ”Ville” was born in March; three puppy girls which turned out to be extremely stubborn little young ladies. Sanni had to be operated (due to uteral torsion), but as soon as she recovered from this operation, and her first astonishment, she nursed her puppies eagerly.
From this litter, I decided to keep Bd`s Filago Minima,“Maija”. Because of Sanni’s hysterectomy, she couldn’t deliver enough milk. So, I had to buy and use some puppy milk replacer. Everything went just fine, until Maija suddenly refused to drink it anymore. I can’t understand why, it remained a mystery. But the more I tried, the more fiercely she fought back, sometimes going totally limb, sometimes kicking and screaming, sometimes gagging as if she was suffocating on the milk I tried to give her. After three sleepless nights I was ready to ask for help. I realized that this puppy would rather wither away that give in. And what was the advice I was given: use a pacifier! Oh yes, thank you ever so much! Wasn’t that exactly what I had been doing, all these days and nights, frantically trying to drown my puppy in milk. But then, on the fourth day, after almost two and a half hour’s “pacifier battle”, something happened, at last. First an experimental suck, then a more thorough one… I was so relieved when I looked at that little missy, sleeping there with her tummy round and full of milk. Hey you, little Miss Redhead, I think you are going to stay with me, after all…

A few months later, the litter of Ville’s mother (Lombardy Angelica) and Sanni’s brother (Bd`s Zapata) was born at Vera Celander’s kennel in Sweden. From this litter, Vera decided to take a cute bitch puppy, Robyn. But she wasn’t the only beauty in this litter, and I hope that I will get a lot of photos of all of them so that I can follow their development in the future.

Kirium`s Ametiel at five months
My dear Nelli died last summer. I could describe her as “every vet’s nightmare”, because her patient files were never filled with any epicrises. Instead of illnesses, this granny was fortunate to live more than thirteen years of healthy and full life.
I just love old dogs. Although puppies are cute, the time you spend with them is filled with teaching and training. When your dog gets older, you can see the results of your work. All the pieces fall into right places, and your dogs are eager to show their skills. Middle-aged dogs already know their place and what they are. They can afford to have “a sense of humour”, only too often on your expense. Well, I suppose we all know how unbearable that sometimes can be, so no more about it now.
And then comes the old age, the steps shorten and the lived life shows in everything. In the middle of everyday haste, wondering eyes meet mine and ask: “Do you still love me?” – “Yes, of course I love you, you old stinky. You are the best!”

After Sanni’s litter, I decided to have a puppy-free year so that I could have enough time to concentrate on the litters of the previous year. During last summer and autumn, I arranged three puppy meetings. Even though puppies are under 12 months old during these meetings, you can often see how they are going to develop, even in that early phase. Each litter brings to light the strengths and weaknesses that my breeding work has produced. This forms the bases for my new combinations. It is my aim to breed healthy and equally strong litters, true to the breed standard. I think that the most difficult thing is to maintain the strengths that I have achieved. To some extent, all combinations are compromises, and this challenge guarantees that I go on with my mission: to develop this superb breed towards the bullmastiff of my own ideal.
So, let’s be ready to face the challenges of the year 2009 :)
Special thanks to Anne and Nanna for your help in Operation Maija.
